Vitro’s glass recycling program grows in Mexico
The objective is to stimulate the culture of glass recycling and Vitro has always emphasized joining efforts with different government authorities, schools, associations, restaurants, bars and hotels to undertake solid waste separation in order to collect glass for recycling. Supporting this goal last September 4 Vitro and the Community Association of Vista Esmeralda in Atizapan, State of Mexico signed an ecological agreement for the collection and recycling of the glass refuse from the housing division. “In this phase we will deliver three 60 kg. capacity containers so the residents can deposit their discarded glass bottles based on their color (clear, green, amber). Once full the containers will be replaced by empty ones”, explains Ruben Vazquez Vitro’s program promoter for central and southeast Mexico. In exchange for the bottles the housing division will receive a benefit in kind, determined by the association, which will then donate the benefit to a worthy cause within the municipality. “We’re working towards the goal in the medium turn for all of the subdivisions within the Esmeralda Zone to join the project; we currently have a similar program in place in the Roma Section of the city and another in Chalco”, he explains. Javier Leal, Vitro’s Environmental Manager, assures us that the agreements form part of the program “For a more transparent world” which is promoted by the company to create and support an environmental culture for glass recycling in Mexico. “By recycling glass we reduce the use of raw materials, prolong the useful life of the physical spaces used for solid waste and we increase our efficiency by using less energy in our furnaces, lower our costs and emit fewer gases into the atmosphere thus improving the air quality”, he explains. In 2008 Vitro signed 226 joint projects for glass recycling with different groups in society. During the first seven months of 2009 we already have 244 joint projects through which 1,961 tons of discarded glass containers have been gathered. |
