Vitro supports sustainable architecture
  • Renowned Architect Pucho Vallejo leads a magisterial conference.
  • Outstanding students that participate in the program, "Cátedra Vitro", travel to Spain.

Pucho Vallejo is one of the most important contemporary architects in Spain today.

As part of the activities of the program “Cátedra Vitro” (Vitro Chair) the renowned architect Pucho Vallejo conducted a magisterial conference before students of architecture from the Tecnológico de Monterrey in the Luis Elizondo auditorium this past 26th of September, 2007.

The prestigious Spanish architect emphasized the enormous potential that glass represents for architectural projects, due to its stylish, thermal, acoustical and safety properties, among others, along with the resulting benefits that are obtained from important energy savings.

“We need to also recognize the important role that glass plays in architecture by being an environmentally friendly material, as it’s 100% recyclable”, he pointed out to the packed audience in the auditorium.

For architect Pucho Vallejo, glass has completely transformed the manner in which we view the world and construct it.

“Today it is the material at the crossroads of functionality, sustainability and design. Thanks to glass we can transpose walls and invite landscapes to form part of our private spaces” he assured the attendees.

He applauded the efforts that Vitro and the Tecnológico de Monterrey have undertaken  to allow architecture students to deepen their knowledge on “best practices” for the use and application of glass, as a means to promote this material as a viable solution to construction industry requirements and its sustainability in benefit of the population in general.

After completing an intense agenda of activities related to the “Cátedra Vitro” in the city of Monterrey, Mexico, Pucho Vallejo returned to Spain where he welcomed the visit of 12 students and 2 faculty members from the Tecnológico de Monterrey who are participating in the program as well as Javier de la Garza representing Vitro.

“It was determined that the first study trip for the “Cátedra Vitro” should be Spain, as it coincides with the idea that the trip should be to the country of origin of the guest architect in order to visit his projects and understand the environment in which he operates”, pointed out Antonio Garza Sastré, Director of the Department of Architecture for the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey campus.

Students from the "Vitro Chair" traveled to Spain to visit first hand outstanding architectural works.

Alejandro Gebara, Marketing Manager for the Vitro Flat Glass business unit, comments that a trip roadmap was layed out to symbolic cities such as Bilbao, San Sebastian, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Madrid and Pamplona where the students were welcomed by the Mayoress Yolanda Barcino at the City Hall.

“The “Cátedra Vitro” represents a great opportunity for students to tour outstanding urban projects with international recognition to check first hand the benefits of the optimum use of glass in architectural projects”, he assured.

Vitro puts above all other issues the promotion of knowledge and support of sustainable architecture through the “Cátedra Vitro”, which was established together with the Tecnológico de Monterrey this year, 2007.
