Thanks to the efforts of Vitro employees as well as: the Secretary for National Defense, the Secretary for Environmental and Natural Resource Protection, the National Forest Commission, the Ministry for Environmental Protection, the Parque Ecológico Chipinque staff and the community of Ciénega de González, the wildfire that charred 4,200 hectares last March 4th in the mountains of Santiago, Nuevo León was contained.

The wildfire, one of the worst ever recorded in the township located 60 kilometers from the city of Monterrey, started on the 14th of March and was extinguished on the 23rd, after burning 2,730 hectares of brush, 840 of grazing grasses and 630 of adult trees.

Francisco Gómez, Protection and Safety Corporate Manager for Vitro confirms, “As we all know, Vitro Parque El Manzano is immersed in the heart of the mountains; nevertheless, through the heroic efforts of our staff at the Park, the Vitro Security Team as well as the authorities our installations suffered no damage.

He adds that for several days our team worked shoulder to shoulder with the Mexican Army and the government authorities to put out the fire which took longer and required additional efforts, due to the high winds registered on March 18th.

“This regrettable event confirms the valor and determination of the heroes who mustered all their strength and stamina to overcome the wildfire; we extend our highest recognition to all those who allowed the Vitro Parque El Manzano to emerge unscathed”, he assured us.

Vitro Parque El Manzano is one of the main efforts of Vitro towards responsibility to society and sustainable development. It is located in the municipality of Santiago some 60 kilometers from the city of Monterrey and covers an area of 585 hectares.

The Park opened its doors to the public in 1972 for the purpose of promoting family integration, ecological consciousness, as well as healthy camaraderie among fellow workers and their families by giving them an appropriate space for the undertaking of their social, work and integration activities.

Currently it offers a wide range of services that include 35 cabins, camping grounds, meeting rooms and recreational areas. In 2007 alone the Park was visited by 45,560 employees and their families.
