Vitro, through the Organization of Wildlife (OVIS), confirmed its commitment to biodiversity and conservation programs for the wilderness by actively participating in the 9th World Wilderness Congress (CMTS) that took place from November 6th to the 13th in Merida, Yucatan.
Founded by The Wild Foundation in 1977, CMTS is the oldest active international public environmental forum in the World. With more than 30 years of conservation achievements, CMTS has evolved into the highest level of an action platform to deal with complex issues regarding nature and wilderness.
The event was organized by The Wild Foundation, the only international organization totally and explicitly dedicated to the protection of wilderness all over the world; whose mission is to protect the wild areas of the planet, its wildlife and the people that depend on them, as wilderness provides social, spiritual, biological and economic benefits.
“One of the most important aspects regarding our participation in this prestigious forum is that we did it through a coalition of companies that we were able to bring together and unite our voices and consolidate our corporate commitments towards the preservation of wilderness”, points out Sergio Jimenez, OVIS Director.
Together with OVIS the coalition was comprised of Acciona – Energía Eólica México, Alfa, Bimbo, Cemex, Coca - Cola de México, Cooper T. Smith de México, Femsa, Ferromex, Fresnillo PLC, Johnson Controls – LTH, Plenus, Promotora Ambiental (Pasa S.A.B. de C.V.), Teg & Tep, and Wal-Mart de México.

Jimenez adds that the participation by the private sector in conservation, biodiversity and sustainable development is of vital importance, as the goods and services that the ecosystems bring to them are critical to industry.
“For this reason we must do all that we can possibly do to work together to protect the important environmental assets that the natural ecosystems provide us through concrete actions such as restoring wildlife to their natural state; one example of this has been the restoration of the Cimarron Wild Sheep”, he explains.
One of the main results from the Congress was the signing of the first International Agreement for the conservation of wilderness between Mexico, Canada and the USA.
Also the Message from Merida was enacted which was a unified international call for action on developing specific guidelines and norms to integrate wilderness and its conservation of biodiversity into a strategy consistent with current climate change issues.
The Congress was inaugurated by President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa of Mexico and was attended by more than one thousand delegates from 50 countries representing governments, civil organizations, indigenous peoples, academia, artists and the private sector.
OVIS is a non-profit organization, founded in 1996 in Monterrey, Mexico, that focuses on ensuring the future and conservation of wildlife in the world and whose mission is the creation of scientific research programs for the conservation and management of ecosystems as well as promoting sustainable development through environmental educational projects and community improvement.
