For the purpose of promoting glass as an artistic element and stimulating creative activity, the Glass Museum, in coordination with the Mexican Council for Culture and Arts (CONACULTA) invites all to participate in the event “2nd Biennial of Art in Glass” that now will include artists from the Iberian Peninsula. “Alter the excellent response that we had in the prior competition, we have decided that in addition to Mexicans and Latin Americans this competition will be broadened to also include talent coming from Spain and Portugal”, affirms Liliana Melo de Sada, Chairwoman of the Board of the Glass Museum. The works of art can be done in any kind of technique in which glass is used as well as its possible blending or interactions with other materials. The themes and use of materials are totally open to creativity so as long as glass comprises a minimum of 40% of the work of art. “This is a great opportunity for artists of plastics, glass craftsmen, industrial designers and other design professionals, as well as architects and students from related fields to show their skills in handling this beautiful material”, she adds.
The contest is divided into two categories: Contemporary Art directed towards Mexican, Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese artists; and New Propositions, reserved exclusively for Mexicans and foreigners who have resided in Mexico a minimum of five years. In this edition of the contest a cash prize of $100,000 Mexican pesos (or its equivalent in Euros) in the form of a first place Acquisition Award will be awarded in each category as well as runner up awards for 2nd and 3rd place. The competition will be open through April 30, 2008. Afterwards the panel of judges, comprised of specialists in plastics art, will select those works that will form part of the final selection and the artists will be notified to submit their entry. Finally the panel of judges will choose the winning art pieces and proceed to the awards ceremony as well as the exhibition of the winning entries in the Glass Museum which should take place during the 2nd half of 2008. According to Paulette Moreno, Glass Museum Director, the winning artists will also have the opportunity to give a seminar or workshop in the Alberto Barovier Glass Art Workshop located at the museum and it will be open to the public. “This competition is highly important since it is the only of its kind that is organized in Monterrey with an invitation to all of Latin America; in addition to conserving and spreading the knowledge of glass art, creating new values in this discipline and promoting glass art at an international level”, she concludes.
