Recycling for "A Cancer Free Mexico"
Vitro personnel are always ready to enthusiastically participate in the multiple company initiatives in the area of social responsibility and sustainable development by giving a helping hand to those who most need it. Once again this was clearly demonstrated when on last September 6th the six month campaign for glass recycling called the “Glass Container Squadron” came to a successful end in which 105 employees from the Marketing Division of Glass Containers located in Mexico City were able to collect 13.2 tons of glass waste for recycling. “The most novel aspect of the campaign is that the glass collected was transformed into a donation through a money voucher to support the “Foundation For A Cancer Free Mexico”, which focuses its efforts on providing medical assistance to very low inclome people who suffer from the disease”, pointed out Roberto Romero, Marketing Vice President for the Vitro Glass Containers business unit. Thanks to the dedicated support and active participation of our colleagues from this Vitro division, the foundation which is located at the General Hospital of Mexico received last August specialized surgical cancer equipment such as Mayo scissors, Greem separators and a foot activated soap pump. The campaign consisted of dividing the employees into three large squadrons each representing the philanthropic institution. The team members collected the waste containers that then were delivered to the Industrial Raw Materials Processing Plant (PROMAPI), a Vitro facility dedicated to the recycling of glass containers that in turn delivered the financial voucher, derived from the recycling process, to purchase the surgical equipment. PROMAPI was given the responsibility of collecting, classifying and processing the glass in order to deliver the money voucher. The winning team received the sum total of the three squadrons. Upon delivering the recognition awards to the winning team, Romero emphasized the importance of spreading a culture of glass recycling not only among employees but also within the public at large.
“Through initiatives such as this we promote glass recycling as one of the most important ways to contribute to protecting the environment and developing a collective ecological conscience in society while supporting a philanthropic institution which has the noble task of coming to the aid of those who most need it”, assured Romero. From its beginnings in 1909, Vitro encourages and promotes socially responsible programs among its employees and in the communities where it conducts business as well as recycling initiatives through the coordination, sponsorship and participation in community, state, national and international programs. Just in 2006 alone we supported more than 150 recycling programs in Mexico from a myriad of collection centers including: schools, hospitals, shopping centers, hotels, municipalities and refuse centers throughout the country. In that year, Vitro’s Glass Containers business unit processed 43,832 tons of recycled glass which allowed for: a longer useful life of many municipal dumps, improvement of the quality of life of the general population by reducing contaminants in the environment and helping the economy of families and communities where it undertook these programs. |
