Vitro and Palace Resorts join efforts to recycle glass
  • Both companies sign an agreement for separating, collecting and shipping the the glass for recycling.
  • The agreement is successful early on by officially sending off the first shipment of glass to the recycle facility.

Actions not Words... the first shipment is on its way.

Congruent with Vitro’s philosophy for implementing initiatives that preserve and protect the environment, it signed a joint agreement last October 18th with the tourist consortium Palace Resorts to begin the separation and recovery of glass used at their resorts located in the city of Cancun and on the Mayan Riviera on the Mexican carribbean coast.

The agreement which was signed at the hotel’s complex at the Moon Palace Hotel in Cancun, Quintana Roo contemplates shipping the recovered glass to Vitro’s recycling facility located in Mexico City.

“More than just words this actually is happening as we speak because on the same day of the signing the first shipment of glass was on its way. We’re starting off on the right foot and we’re confident that with these efforts we will strengthen the recycling culture in the general population” assured Javier Leal, Ecology and Recycling Manager for the Vitro Glass Container business unit.

He adds that it is great motivation to partner with Palace Resorts since both companies share the conviction of social responsibility and sustainable development.

Palace Resorts is a tourism company of 100% Mexican capital that began operations in the eighties. Currently it is one of the principal developers, owners and operators of luxury hotels and resorts located in the most important tourist centers in Mexico.

The agreement will promote a culture for the separation of solid waste.

“Thanks to this strategic alliance we estimate we will collect 20 tons of glass per month, and confirms our strong commitment to do all within our powers to leave a cleaner and healthier environment to future generations. As a result of these glass recycling campaigns Vitro is benefited by reducing the amount of energy used in its production facilities”, pointed out Leal.

In addition to this agreement the foundations have been established so that in 2008 each one of the business units of Palace Resorts will join the process of Voluntary Environmental Auditing that is promoted by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency of Mexico (PROFEPA)

“This glass recycling project is yet another example that in Vitro we all join forces to encourage responsible consumption and promote the culture of solid waste separation”, concluded Leal.

Just in 2006 alone, Vitro’s Glass Containers business unit collected over 43,832 tons of glass for recycling by working with schools, restaurants, associations and city governments in over 150 glass collection programs.

At Vitro we’re very proud to work with materials that are 100% recyclable and that contribute to environmental conservation while becoming a strategic tool for our clients to help them consolidate and maintain their leadership position.
